As we head into February, Black History Month & Aspenne's birth month - we decided it would be a great time to feature some of the great titles we're reading!
On Day 6, we're reading:
What If...by Samantha Berger, illustrated by Mike Curato
Book Summary:
Creativity, the power of imagination, and the importance of self-expression are celebrated in this inspiring picture book written and illustrated by real-life best friends.
This girl is determined to express herself! If she can't draw her dreams, she'll sculpt or build, carve or collage. If she can't do that, she'll turn her world into a canvas. And if everything around her is taken away, she'll sing, dance, and dream...
Stunning mixed media illustrations, lyrical text, and a breathtaking gatefold conjure powerful magic in this heartfelt affirmation of art, imagination, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Our thoughts:
Aspenne and I just love this book! The message to create and express yourself using what you have on hand (or not) is powerful. The young girl gives many alternatives to creating art and expressing herself through painting, drawing in the dirt, carving, shadowing and much much more. To our wondrous surprise, there is a large center-fold that displays beautiful artwork right within the book - before What If...we had never seen such a thing! How fitting for this book that shows that your creativity goes as far as your mind can imagine.
